Criteria

Some of you may wonder how it is I decide what number to slap on something I review for a rating.  It’s simple.  I rate according to how much fun I had and how good I think the item is.  I use a scale of 1-10, 1 being horrendous and not worth the time it takes to view or play, and 10 being the best thing I’ve ever viewed or played.  It’s entertainment, and I rate something based upon how entertaining I found it to be.

So I just read your criteria, and I realized that I hadn’t even noticed that you were including actual quantifiable ratings in your reviews. I went back to check out your posts to date and realized that, sure enough, you have diligently ended each entry with a score as described here. I think that I previously assumed that 8/10 or 7/10 was a time reference. I didn’t notice that the “time” references were wrong because I wasn’t paying very close attention to the actual fraction.

Now that I know what to look for, I’ll know that 7/10 doesn’t have anything to do with this July, but is instead a 7 out of 10 . . . what? Points? Stars? Notches on the enjoyment continuum?

May I recommend that the scale you use be in reference to cats? Think about it. Ten cats! That would be wild. One cat. Cute, but lonely, and perhaps a little sad. Ten cats though . . . that’s crazy good times that I’ve gotta see to believe.

If you don’t think a cat scale is appropriate, maybe you could think about something like donuts. The low could be one stale, dried up donut. The max could be “a rater’s dozen” of 10 hot donuts.

I realize of course that as you have indicated in the rules, this is your blog, so it follows that you rule. I just thought I’d throw some ideas out there. Feel free to use them, or ignore them. That donut idea has me got me thinking. Maybe I’ll start a blog . . . ooh, or go to a bakery.

Is it time to rate with donuts?
