The Empty Crown/Twelve Treasures Series
By Rosemary Edghill
Synopsis
Ruth's friends, Michael, Naomi, Jane, and Phillip are all occupied. It's a rainy day in New York City, and it's Ruth's 30th birthday. Some fun. She decides in her depression to go out for some ice cream and on her way home, she comes across a figure laying in an alley, apparently mugged. Thus begins the story of Ruth Marlowe the librarian and her love, the elf Baron Melior Rohannan of the House of the Silver Silences. They go on a quest with Ruth's friends to try and regain his sword and prevent his house's banishment, and prove to the elven council that Melior has been conspired against.
Why I Love This Series
There's very simple, but effective writing in this series. There is plenty of intrigue with the complicated politics in the elven court, and I admire anyone who can pull off political intrigue effectively. I also love this one because it's about something you don't see much of, a librarian heroine. What's really sad is there won't be any more books forthcoming, because the publishers didn't think there was enough interest, and this was such a nice sweet story. Not as sweeping and epic as some fantasies, but very nice and very good writing. Ms. Edghill really cares about these characters and it shows. But because the publishers won't publish any more of her writing from the series, the story is left unfinished, which really irks me. This is still a wonderful trilogy, however, and really should be read. It's worth checking out.
